      <image:caption>Don’t fall for the protein hype. Protein contains the same amount of calories per gram as carbohydrates (4kcals/gram). However, some protein sources also contain FAT, which means if you overeat protein you are probably also overeating fat calories (9 calories per gram).</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Sweet Scoop - Sugar - Is it really the enemy? - Fresh fruit v.s. fruit juices</image:title>
      <image:caption>In comparison the average orange only has only about 15 grams of carbohydrate with 12 grams of sugar, so you get all the health benefits of the fruit with only a small amount of sugar and a much lower insulin response. This is why fruit is the better choice between the two. By the way, if you ever want to check the content of a food that does not have a label, this is a reliable resource that contains accurate data analysis of different foods: USDA Food Data Central Search</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Sweet Scoop - Sugar - Is it really the enemy? - So you’ve finally decided to kick sugar out of your diet- good for you. That is probably one of the best decisions you can make towards a healthy lifestyle. But not ALL sugars are “bad” for you. Sugars are naturally occurring in foods and they are the preferred fuel source of your body and brain. Sure, you can force your body to use fat for fuel in the form of ketones but you can also force it to use protein and eat the muscle off your bones, but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy to do it. Those are really back-up plans and not meant for everyday use. Glucose is what fuels your cells and that comes from sugar and carbs so we essentially need some, we just don’t need to bombard ourselves with it day and night. That’s the problem.</image:title>

      <image:title>The Sweet Scoop - Weight loss medications - One of the doctors I work with forwarded an article to me last week about the injectable weight loss medication Wegovy, a GLP-1 synthetic hormone, which is one of the main hormones our bodies naturally make that helps us feel full after we eat and lowers the appetite. Everyone is buzzing about this medication at this point, developing strong and sometimes negative opinions about it’s use but the fact remains that it works, really well in fact. It also helps your pancreas to make its own insulin better and thus can also treat type 2 diabetes. This article emphasized the importance of a healthy lifestyle when it comes to weight loss and highlighted the human body's ability to produce its own GLP-1 hormone but failed to mention that the levels of this hormone as well as the way in which our brains use it, goes way down as our weight goes up and it never recovers even after we lose the weight (hence the reason why so many people regain weight after they’ve lost it and struggle with intense hunger).</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fd5089ffd756c1ce4d7d691/1707089170823-1XGALO5L7RRYYXY31XRE/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>The Sweet Scoop - Weight loss medications - Now, this is not the case for everyone. A small handful of my patients have taken Wegovy/Ozempic and didn’t lose a pound. They also don’t eat much or struggle with hunger at all. That’s likely because GLP-1 hormone deficiency was not the reason for their weight troubles in the first place. I know a lot of us tend to think people who are overweight just eat too much but there is a laundry list of other things that influence the body’s ability to gain and lose weight. There are also lots of other hormones that regulate body weight and appetite, like PYY, GIP, insulin, Leptin, Ghrelin… so it’s anyone’s guess really which one is the culprit. You can’t test for these either so it truly is a guess. I’ve also worked with many patients who have lost weight through diet and lifestyle changes without the need to take these medications.</image:title>

      <image:title>The Sweet Scoop - Weight loss medications - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Ozempic (Semaglutide) is FDA approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. Wegovy (also Semaglutide) is an FDA approved medication for the treatment of obesity in adults.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Sweet Scoop - Weight loss medications - The point is for many people, it’s been a long hard journey to no where. Taking this medication could be the answer to their specific weight problem. After a lifetime of struggling to regulate body weight, suffering through endless diets and disappointments, facing criticism from family members, friends, and even healthcare providers, this medication may correct a physiological problem within them - a hormone imbalance that is the root of most people’s weight issue. It’s not that you need this drug to lose weight but this medication can make it easier for you to follow a healthy diet and weight loss plan if you have made attempts and struggled with this in the past. Does it come with risks? Of course it does. So does taking aspirin for a headache or Nyquil for a cold. All medications come with risks and side effects. Some people have a reaction and some don’t. These drugs are not right for everyone and are contraindicated in patients prone to certain medical conditions but after working with hundreds of patients who have been taking these medications for years I can say in my opinion, the benefits far outweigh the risks, if it’s right for you.</image:title>

      <image:title>About Me - Experience</image:title>
      <image:caption>Stephanie graduated from the University of Northern Colorado and began her career as an outpatient Registered Dietitian (RD) and Certified Dietitian Nutritionist (CDN) at Medical Associates of the Hudson Valley in Kingston, NY. Using effective behavioral counseling techniques including motivational interviewing and the trans-theoretical model of readiness to change, Stephanie counseled clients with a wide range of conditions including gastrointestinal diseases, obesity, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, rheumatologic disorders and HIV. She also hosted a monthly support group to assist patients with managing their diabetes. Later transitioning to become the clinical registered dietitian at Health-Quest (Nuvance) Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, her responsibilities were to oversee the nutrition care of patients in the medical surgery, intensive care, and acute rehabilitation units. Using the Nutrition Care Process to identify nutrition problems and provide support to the physicians and surgeons, Stephanie ensured patients were receiving adequate nutrition needed to heal and recover as quickly as possible. She sat as a board member on the Nutrition Care Committee, assisting in the interdisciplinary policy revisions for enteral and parenteral nutrition administration. Having special certifications in both malnutrition and nutrition-focused physical examination, she spearheaded a progressive movement to increase hospital-wide awareness of malnutrition and the need to prioritize treatment. In July 2018, Stephanie became the official nutrition educator for the Northern Dutchess Hospital Cardiac Rehab Program, creating a 6 week curriculum to help patients recover from and prevent future cardiac-related incidents by educating them on the role that nutrients play in cardiovascular health. Stephanie is a Certified Specialist in Obesity and Weight Management (CSOWM) and a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) at the Institute for Family Health. As a CSOWM, CDCES, Stephanie provides both Medical Nutrition Therapy and Diabetes Self-Management Education to underserved members of her community.</image:caption>
